The St. Lazarus Cemetery or “Doina” (as everyone calls it) from Chisinau, Republic of Moldova is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. The only living inhabitants of this territory are the gravediggers. Be it winter, spring, summer or fall – the preoccupations of the diggers always remain the same. They dig and they bury. On one hand, the film describes the daily life of a group of gravediggers and the tiny world that surrounds them. At the same time the film explores the traditional preoccupation of the preparation for death and burial of Moldovans.
Pavel Cuzuioc was born in 1978 at Chisinau, Republica Moldova. He studied law at Bucharest, postgradueted at The Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, where he also finished Film Directing at Vienna Film Academy. “Digging for life” is his second documentary.
