A provocative French film „is an intimate testemony“on fighting against AIDS, directed by Robin Campillo, while Loveless is a bold film by Russian director Andreya Zvyagintsev, created without support of the Russian state.
It is already a tradition that Cannes awardees are presented at Vukovar Film Festival, and this year we continue the tradition. Among many premiers from Cannes, two are the most important – French 120 Beats Per Minute that won Grand Prix, that is the second most important award, and Russian Loveless that won the Jury Prize, the third most important award at Cannes.
French 120 Beats Per Minute is directed by Robin Campillo, a declared homosexual born in Marocco. The story happens in the nineties when Paris is occupied by AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power activists with the aim to pressure the government and pharmaceutical industry to react to the spreading of AIDS. Campillo said that he was himself a member of the organization and has demonstrated on the streets of Paris so his film is a first hand testimony on the subject, which was accepted with praises by the audience. Hugues Charbonneau i Marie-Ange Luciani, the film producers said that it was relatively easy to get funding for the film, getting almost five million euros in a few months that covered the film's budget.
Loveless shows that Andrey Zvyagintsev, famous 53-year old director is in great shape. This is a portrait of a well appointed married Moscow couple who are just going through their divorce, and being incredible selfish (both with new partners), they ignore the feelings of their 12-year old son. When the school informs them one day that the boy is not in the school, they realize he is missing and start a big search for him, while still continuing to selfishly care about their interest. Zvyagintsev said that after Leviathan he realized that his film was not well accepted by the Russian government and decided to skip state funding on his next film. Loveless is produced independently, with Russian producers finding partners in Germany, France and Belgium.
