Storyline
Drama revolves around the affluent Laurent family, which runs a successful construction business founded by now-senile patriarch George (Jean-Louis Trintignant). These days, the business is run by his icy daughter Anne (Isabelle Huppert ), who has lost patience with her reckless grown son Pierre (Franz Rogowski). Anne’s brother Thomas (Mathieu Kassovitz) spends much of his time dealing with his own business needs and juggling affairs on the side, while his alienated 13-year-old daughter Eve (Fantine Harduin) looks on at the disaffected people around her in mounting disgust.
Michael Haneke (born March 23, 1942, Munich, Germany), Austrian director and screenwriter whose stark and provocative films made him a leading figure in European cinema in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Haneke’s career in cinema began with Der siebente Kontinent (1989). He cast French star Juliette Binoche in Code inconnu (2000). Next, Isabelle Huppert evinced a middle-aged woman’s psychosexual frustrations in La Pianiste (2001), which Haneke adapted from a novel by Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek. He found greater success with Caché (2005). Haneke subsequently explored the roots of fascism in Das weisse Band (2009). The film captured the Palme d’Or at Cannes. A second Palme d’Or went to Amour (2012), an uncharacteristically affectionate portrait of an elderly couple facing mortality. It received five Oscar nominations.
