Storyline

Dubbed an “urban Western,” Dogman takes place in an Italian suburb somewhere between metropolis and wild nature. „Dogman“ is the name of a pet grooming shop and also the tragic prediction of the main character’s metamorphosis from man to animal. Based on a true story that took place 30 years ago and of which nobody will ever know the truth, Dogman digs deep into the human dilemmas of the violence hidden inside each one of us. Marcello, our main character, finds himself involved in a dangerous relationship of subjugation with Simone, a former violent boxer who terrorizes the entire neighborhood. In an effort to reaffirm his dignity after he was in prison for a year because of Simone, Marcello will submit to an unexpected act of vengeance.

About the director

Matteo Garrone was born 15 October 1968 in Rome. In 1996 he won the Sacher d'Oro, an award sponsored by Nanni Moretti, with the short film Silhouette (1996), that became one of the three episodes of his first feature film Land in Between (1996). He won Best Director at the European Film Awards and at the David di Donatello Awards for Gomorrah (2008). His film Reality (2012) competed in competition at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prix. His next film Tale of Tales (2015) was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. His latest film is Dogman which won Best actor award at the 2018 Cannes film festival.
